Question 64: How many commandments did God give on Mount Sinai?
Answer: A. Ten commandments.

Supporting Scripture:
(1) The Ten Commandments.
20:1 And God spoke all these words, saying,

2 "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

3 "You shall have no other gods before me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the
 earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord
 your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of
 those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13 You shall not murder. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's." .Exodus 20:1-17
(2) The Ten Commandments.
5:1 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your
 hearing today, and youshall learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in
 Horeb. 3 Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today.
 4 The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, 5 while I stood between the
 Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For you were afraid because of the fire, and
 you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

7 You shall have no other gods before me.

8 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is
on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for
 I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth
 generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my
 commandments.

11 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes
 his name  in vain.

12 Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and
 do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you
 or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your
 livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as
 well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought
 you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep
 the Sabbath day.

16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it
 may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

17      You shall not murder.

18 And you shall not commit adultery.

19 And you shall not steal.

20 And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

21 And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his
 male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.'

22 These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the
 thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them
 to me. Deuteronomy 5:1-22.

Answer: God's moral Law.

Supporting Scripture:
(1)< 25 He said to them, Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." 26 And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.
27 There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28 and they asked him a question, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
Luke 20:25-28.
(2) 2:14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.
10:5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them.

Question 68: What is the sum of the Ten Commandments?
Answer: To love God with all my heart, and my neighbour as myself.

Supporting Scripture:
(1) The Greatest Commandment.
6:1 Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 10 And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

Love and Serve the Lord.
11:1 You shall therefore love the Lord your God and keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always.
Deuteronomy 6:1-15,Deuteronomy 11:1.

10:25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27 And he answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, You go, and do likewise."
Luke 10:25-37.

Supporting Scripture:
(1) 20:4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. Exodus 20:4-6
(2) 5:8 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. Deuteronomy 5:8-10.

Question 75: What does the Second Commandment teach us?
Answer: To worship God in the right way, and to avoid idolatry.

Supporting Scripture:
(1)The Folly of Idolatry
16:9 All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. 10 Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? 11 Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together. 12 The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint. 13 The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house. 14 He cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. 15 Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!" 17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, Deliver me, for you are my god!" 18 They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. 19 No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?" 20 He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?"
Isaiah 44:9-20.
(2) 5 To whom will you liken me and make me equal,
    and compare me, that we may be alike?
6 Those who lavish gold from the purse,
    and weigh out silver in the scales,
hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;
    then they fall down and worship!
7 They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it,
    they set it in its place, and it stands there;
    it cannot move from its place.
If one cries to it, it does not answer
    or save him from his trouble.

8 Remember this and stand firm,
        recall it to mind, you transgressors,
9  remember the former things of old;
        for I am God, and there is no other;
    I am God, and there is none like me, Isaiah 46:5-9.
(3) 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:23-24.
(4) 29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. Acts 17:29.

4 Who will not fear, O Lord,

Leviticus 19:30, 23:3.
(2) 13 If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
    from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
    and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
    or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
    and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
    for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." Isaiah 58:13-14.
