It is the experience of those who have compiled these texts that to know passages of the Bible by heart and to be able to find them immediately is of tremendous value. It is a very great help to one's own spiritual life and it
is almost essential to anyone who seeks to do any evangelistic work. For whoever is ashamed [here and now] of Me and My words in this adulterous (unfaithful) and [preeminently] sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory (splendor and majesty) of His Father with the holy angels. For whoever is ashamed [here and now] of Me and My words in this adulterous (unfaithful) and [preeminently] sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory (splendor and majesty) of His Father with the holy angels.
This selection of texts has been made with these two objects in mind and is intended to supply a basic armoury for daily use
Strictly no verse can be taken out of its context; it is hoped therefore that the context will in each case be carefully studied before the verse is learnt.
Otherwise its meaning could be partly lost or mistaken. The passages listed are grouped in two sections.
Part One contains texts that set forth the basis of the Christian life and it ourworkings; Part Two, those that set forth main points of Christian doctrine.
It is suggested that Part One should be worked through first and that only one text should be selected for memorization from each group of texts.
The verses printed in italic type will probably be found to be the most suitable for this purpose.
The aim of the compilers has not been to provide 'proof texts' in the old sense for each particular Christian doctrine. For a clear
and systematic demonstration of what the Bible teaches the reader is referred to In Understanding be Men, By T.C. Hammond (I.V.F.)
and other textbooks of theology which give full lists of references. The verses listed have been chosen partly because their sense is not materially
altered by isolating them from their context.
A considerable variety of methods can be used for learning such verses by heart. Probably the best method is to learn one each day, or several a week,
for a month or two; then rest and start again. Continual review will be found to be necessary. The verses have been printed in full for the benefit of those
who wish to carry this booklet with them so as to make use of odd moments in trains and buses, etc for memorizing. For some a better method may be to write
out a group of the verseson separate cards or on a sheet of paper. This list can be carried in a pocket Bible and memorized as opportunity occurs.
A periodical written exam is almost essential if the verses are to be learnt accurately.
What ever method is used, the aim is that Scripture should increasingly control our thoughts and actions and that our presentation of the gospel
should really be scriptural. It is still true that we need to know the Bible for "doctrine, for reproof, for correction, fo instruction in righteousness:
that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." It is equally, still true that we "do err, because (we) know not the
scripture, neither the power of God."
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
